Shortly after 8:15 a.m. Saturday morning near Avenue 24 in Tulare County, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and fire crews were called to multiple crash scenes on both northbound and southbound lanes of the busy Central California route. Conditions were reported to be foggy with visibility reduced to as little as 100-200 feet, likely contributing to the chain-reaction collisions that ultimately involved 59 vehicles in total, including sedans, pickup trucks and commercial rigs.
Highway 99 was closed in both directions for several hours as emergency crews worked to assist those involved, clear wreckage and restore traffic flow. Drivers were trapped as vehicles piled up across the highway, with some motorists forced to abandon their cars and seek safety on the roadside.
Medical personnel transported at least 10 people to nearby hospitals for treatment. Most injuries were reported as minor to moderate, with one individual sustaining a moderate forehead injury, while the rest experienced less severe wounds. All other motorists caught in the crash were bused to the Tulare Ag Center for shelter and support by responding agencies.
