Terry Lee Thomas, a Florida man with a long history of criminal arrests, was charged in connection with the October 30, 2010, shooting of Tamesha Doreen Miles, authorities reported.
According to law enforcement records, Ms. Miles was sitting in her parked vehicle when she was struck by five gunshots. She was reported to be approximately four months pregnant at the time of the incident and was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in critical but stable condition following the attack.
Thomas, then 37 years old, was arrested and held in the local jail on charges including attempted first-degree murder and other violent offenses related to the shooting. Law enforcement officials stated that prior to this arrest, Thomas had been free on bond after an earlier apprehension on suspicion of aggravated battery.
Court filings and police reports also noted that Thomas had been booked in the Polk County Jail more than 30 times over two decades on a range of charges, including kidnapping, battery, theft, possession of bomb-making devices, and armed robbery.
Years later, Thomas pleaded guilty in a separate case involving the fatal shooting of another individual and the wounding of Ms. Miles, resulting in a combined prison sentence of more than a decade. Prosecutors in that case said the victim was shot as she sat in her vehicle during the 2010 incident.
